Young Marine of the Year Candidate 4: YM Sgt John P. Sollinger

Young Marine Sergeant Sollinger is making his second showing as a candidate for this award.  He was this year’s Quarter 3 Young Marine of the Quarter.

He lives with is father Steven, his mother Colleen, and his four sisters in Huber Heights, Ohio.

His awards include the Honor Graduate Award with silver R, the Good Conduct Award, the Academic Achievement Award with gold lamp, the Drill Competition Award with silver palm, and the Perfect Attendance Award.

Young Marine Sergeant Stewart is making his debut as a candidate for this award.  He joined the Young Marines on 3 March 2014 and was this year’s Quarter 2 Young Marine of the Quarter.

His father, Roger Stewart, serves as a Registered Adult for our Unit.  He lives with his mother, Carrie Poynter, and his sister YM PFC Poynter (also a Young Marine) in Englewood, Ohio.

Young Marine Staff Sergeant Loper is making his running for the second time as a candidate for this award.  He won for our unit and earned the Regimental Young Marine of the Year for the Ohio Regiment last year.  He joined the Young marines on 3 March 2014 and was this year’s Quarter 1 Young Marine of the Quarter.

Young Marine Gunnery Sergeant Murphy is making his debut as a candidate for this award.  He is the 2016 Recipient of the Young Marine Core Values Award and joined the Young Marines on 1 February 2012 and was the Quarter 4 Young Marine of the Quarter in 2015.

Young Marines and JROTC

I’ve been in the Young Marines for over two years. In those two years, I’ve learned skills I would not have anywhere else. I’ve become more of a leader by far and it helped a lot when I joined the Air Force JROTC program at my school.

It allowed me to take a leadership role right away. I was able to help everyone because I knew what I was doing.  Even still when anyone needs help they come to me.

Red Ribbon Week Efforts Award Proclamation from Huber Heights Mayor

On October 26th, 2015 the Miami Valley Young Marines were the recipients of a Proclamation from Tom McMasters, the Mayor of Huber Heights, OH.

The proclamation speaks of the efforts the Young Marines do for the community during Red Ribbon Week which runs from 23-31 October each year.  This year’s efforts were greater than normal with the Young Marines conducting their own after-school anti drug course to the community’s youth.  This course ran each afternoon from 5:00pm to 6:00pm 26-29 October.  Four ...
